Why You Should Maintain Strong Professional Network

Exactly 10 years ago, at the Project Management Institute Global Congress (now Global Summit) in Arizona, I organized a side event for the Nigerian delegates to network.

One of the new connections I made was NAZIF BENNA MBA, PMP, SPM® a Nigerian IT Project Leader based in California. We hit it off and constantly kept in touch with each. We developed friendship beyond the professional relationship.

It’s no surprise that we will both be collaborating to deliver a session at the upcoming hashtag#PMIGlobalSummit in LA, his hometown.

In today’s interconnected world, a strong professional network is one of the most valuable assets you can have for career advancement. Building and maintaining relationships with peers, mentors, industry leaders, and colleagues opens doors to new opportunities, resources, and insights that can propel your career forward.

Here are some key benefits of a solid professional network:

1. Access to Opportunities: Whether it’s job openings, collaborations, or partnerships, a good network often serves as a gateway to new career opportunities that may not be publicly advertised.

2. Learning and Development: A diverse network exposes you to different perspectives, ideas, and knowledge. Engaging with others in your field helps you stay informed about industry trends and innovations, accelerating your personal and professional growth.

3. Mentorship and Guidance: Mentors and experienced professionals in your network can offer invaluable advice, helping you navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and accelerate your progress in achieving career goals.

4. Increased Visibility: Being connected with key players in your industry helps you build a strong reputation. Regular interaction and contribution within your network showcase your expertise and can lead to recognition, recommendations, and career advancement.

5. Emotional and Professional Support: Networks provide not only career opportunities but also a support system. Engaging with people who understand your professional landscape can be a source of motivation, encouragement, and feedback when you need it most.

A good professional network is a long-term investment. Nurturing meaningful connections and providing value to others creates a mutually beneficial ecosystem that will help you advance and thrive throughout your career.

So, if you find yourself in a gathering like a conference, don’t just learn, connect and grow your network, that’s your networth!
